Is Face Fit Testing really necessary? Yes it is.

Whenever and where ever an employee is required to wear Respiratory Protection Equipment (RPE) for their working activity, it is the employers responsibility to ensure that the correct RPE is provided and fits the individual employees.

Work activities include:

  • Cutting a material such as stone or wood
  • Using a product containing volatile solvents
  • Handling a dusty powder
  • Welding stainless steel

The current Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations highlight the dangers from silica dust, asbestos fibres and other airborne dusts and fibres harmful to health.

If the RPE leaks due to incorrect fitting, it will not protect the wearer from inhaling the harmful dusts.

A major cause of leaks is poor fit – tight-fitting face pieces need to fit the wearer’s face to be effective.

Work-related respiratory diseases:

  • Protection is essential to prevent contracting diseases like:
  • Respiratory cancers include lung cancer
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Occupational asthma
  • Pneumoconiosis
  • Non-cancerous respiratory diseases
